Life History of Bhrigu Rishi
Rishi Bhrigu is one of the most revered sages in Hindu tradition. He is considered one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) and a prominent figure in Vedic literature. His life and teachings span myth, philosophy, astrology, and cosmology.
1. Birth and Origins
- Parentage: Rishi Bhrigu was born from the mind of Lord Brahma, the creator god in Hinduism. This makes him a Manasaputra (mind-born son) of Brahma.
- Gotra Founder: He is the progenitor of the Bhrigu Gotra, and his descendants are called Bhargavas.
2. Role in Vedic Literature
- He played a major role in compiling and transmitting Vedic knowledge, especially in rituals and astrology.
- Bhrigu is credited with contributions to the Rigveda and is associated with various mantras and hymns.

A. Test of the Trimurti (Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma)
- Bhrigu once tested the three principal deities: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, to determine who among them was most worthy of worship.
- He insulted all three in different ways:
- Ignored Brahma, making him angry.
- Disrespected Shiva, leading to Shiva’s rage.
- Kicked Lord Vishnu in the chest while he was resting. Instead of getting angry, Vishnu humbly apologized and massaged Bhrigu’s foot.
- As a result, Bhrigu declared Vishnu to be the most compassionate and worthy of worship.
B. Curse on Goddess Lakshmi
- As a consequence of Bhrigu kicking Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu’s consort, felt insulted and cursed the Brahmins (Bhrigu being one) to suffer from poverty in future births.
C. Bhrigu’s Contribution to Astrology
- Bhrigu Samhita is a legendary compendium of horoscopes and predictive astrology, said to contain detailed predictions for millions of individuals.
- It is believed that Bhrigu used his divine vision to write these predictions during meditation.
4. Family and Lineage
- Bhrigu’s wife was Khyati, the daughter of Daksha.
- He had a son named Shukracharya, the preceptor of the Asuras (demons) and a master of Sanatana Vidya and resurrection techniques.
- His lineage includes sages like Chyavana and Richika.
5. Philosophical Contributions
- Bhrigu appears in the Taittiriya Upanishad, where he is taught by his father Varuna about the nature of Brahman (ultimate reality).
- Through contemplation, Bhrigu concludes that Ananda (bliss) is the ultimate form of Brahman, after exploring food, breath, mind, intellect, and joy.

- Rishi Bhrigu’s contributions span across ritual science, cosmology, astrology, and metaphysics.
